It is a fact that it takes calories to burn calories, and this how the diet was formulated, as starving is not the solution to weight loss.

What are the benefits?

The most important fact about this diet is that it has been clinically proven to work. As long as the dieter follows all the instructions that come with this diet, they will lose the exact amount of weight that the diet promises, or even more. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University have found that dieters were more likely to complete the program, lose weight, and keep it off, and also lost twice as much weight as those on other "healthy" diets.

The program is easy to follow. All the dieter has to do is to eat when told to eat and to drink when told to drink. There are 5 prepared meals to eat, and one meal that the dieter makes himself or herself, following a set of rules of what can be and can't be in the food. This method not only helps dieters lose the weight and keep it off, but also teaches them how to make healthy food so that once they are off the diet, the weight does not return.

The pre-packaged meals are full of healthy, well-balanced food that contains all the essential nutrients, minerals, and vitamins that a healthy person needs to lose weight and burn calories. The food is soy-based, which aids in heart health and is a fantastic source of protein.

Depending on the dieter's specific health conditions, Medifast offers different meal plans, from plans made specifically for women, men, or diabetics. There are even plans for vegetarians and lactose-intolerant individuals.

What are the disadvantages?

For starters, pre-packaged food may not be appealing to certain people. Some participants cannot get used to the sudden change in diet. The meals consist of oatmeal, shakes, and other foods and drinks that can be dried and then rehydrated for consumption.

It is important to note that the dieter must exercise in order to lose the desired amount of weight. This is not a miracle diet, and there is no way to safely lose weight without exercising.
